Full Interview
- Could you please introduce yourself and describe your role in the fashion industry?
- Hi! I’m Sam Norris, I’m a fashion content creator. Most people know me by ‘freesami’ or ‘Sami’ though, ha.
- How did you first become involved in fashion? What sparked your interest?
- The earliest I can remember, I was just starting middle school. I used to be really obsessed with watching early 2010’s rap music videos. The more I started to watch them, I started to notice their Jordans. I became super infatuated with sneakers, which eventually snowballed into where I am today. Although it’s a much longer story.
- Can you share a bit about your journey in the fashion world and how it has led you to where you are now?
- It’s been a constant self discovery journey. I think it’s very evident within my content as well. To see my first videos, to how they’ve grown now, it’s just constant evolution. To go from nothing, to people knowing who I am, whether they love or hate me. To make friends with the people I grew up looking up to. Finding out how to do small things better. I think my style has been a great insight to me growing as a person too. You can see the evolution because I’ve documented a good majority of it. The best part is it’s only starting too! Imagine where you could be five years from now, if you just keep applying the same work ethic that you do now. That’s something I think about a lot.
- What does a typical day look like for you? How do you balance your professional and personal life?
- Wake up, make eggs (religiously), hit the gym, then head off to work. In all my free time from work I make content, whether it be I’m filming or editing. Most of my fans already know I work two jobs in between the fashion stuff. The goal is to quit my jobs and do content by the end of this year so, fingers crossed. The balance is just leaving different parts of my life at the door. At the coffee shop, I’m not in the content creator mode. At home, I’m not in server mode. It’s a balance!
- Can you tell us about a particularly memorable collaboration or project you’ve worked on with other creatives in the New York City fashion scene?
- We did a prom sponsorship a couple months back! All of us (Miles, Doctor, Casketpaint, Jared, Izeeye) wanted to give back in some way, so we created this giveaway. We all picked kids to sponsor and got them clothes. It was super fulfilling because we came together to use our platforms for the betterment of the community.
- How has the fashion community in New York City influenced and supported your work?
- It’s progressive and always moving forward! That’s the best part about it. It’s hard to feel uninspired in a city like New York, it’s everywhere you look. Especially within the creatives I meet, their passion just furthers mine.
- Can you share any stories about mentors or role models who have helped shape your career in fashion?
- I grew up on fashion YouTube, so I was always watching Owen Hyatt, The Fashion Archive, Sangiev, etc. I started getting more into content creation, and my audience started growing larger than I thought it ever would. I remember this one morning, I was sitting at my desk eating breakfast. I got a notification, it was a message from The Fashion Archive saying he was a fan of my videos. That was one of the most surreal moments for me, ever. To hear that from someone who is the literal reason I started making videos, was just… no words. Same with Owen Hyatt, those were moments where I really started to believe in myself.
- How do you see the fashion industry in New York City evolving and what role do you hope to play in shaping its future?
- It’s going to constantly evolve, I see it shifting even more towards compatibility with the information age we’re in right now. More designers who are relevant in the social media space, better collaborations, and more culture focused. I hope to play a role in bringing more positivity to the fashion culture. I just want to be someone who people feel they can look up!
- Can you tell us about any upcoming projects or collaborations that you’re excited about?
- None that I can talk about quite yet, unfortunately. Stay tuned though, ha!
- Can you tell us about any particularly memorable fashion events or shows you’ve attended or participated in in New York City?
- Going to a pop up and getting recognized for the first time. I went by myself, just out of interest for the event. So to meet those people was super full circle. To finally connect with the people that watch me, away from a screen, was a different kind of happiness for me.
- How do you stay connected and engaged with the fashion community in New York City?
- It’s mainly via my audience, connecting with them as best I can. I try to always give insight to advancing in the fashion world. Giving them advice, showing them exactly how I do what I do, things of that nature. In NYC, I always make sure to stay active in the scene. Collaborating with my peers, going to pop ups, and always expanding my network of great creatives.
- Can you share any stories about overcoming challenges or setbacks in your career in fashion?
- The biggest obstacle was always the people around me. When I started making content, the people closest to me would always make fun of me. Very downplaying, always saying that I was wasting my time. Learning how to only trust my own intuition, away from outside opinions, was the hardest part. Now though, those people are out of my life, so I feel free in my creative vision. Along with my creator friends I’ve made, being around them instead now is far more fulfilling.
- How do you balance staying true to your own creative vision with staying relevant and current in the fast-paced world of fashion?
- I never let trends dictate my sense of judgement or my actions. I pay attention to trends, as it’s important to the culture of fashion, but that’s the extent of it. I wear what makes me happy, even if I’m the only person who likes it. Through that, I feel very true to myself. My creativity comes in waves, so I try to never force it, and just do what makes me happy.
- Can you tell us about any particularly meaningful interactions or connections you’ve made through your work in fashion?
- Meeting Doctor Garmentz when he was just starting. Seeing him evolve, grow, and expand from the jump has been very meaningful to me. As someone who’s closer to me, it’s like seeing that and finally feeling like “I can do that too!”. He’s like a big brother to me. He’s always reciprocated that support too. It means a lot to know I have someone, who’s going for the same thing as myself, that really has my back.
